Pro Golf Lessons with Dean Hartman (Lesson 5: Ball aloft the feet)

Pro Golf Lessons with Dean Hartman (Lesson 5: Ball aloft the feet) Video Clips.

Golf is one of the few sports in which the practice area is very different from the the playing area. We generally practice our swing technique from a flat lie at the driving range but once we get to the course we encounter many uneven lies. When this happens we have to be able to adjust. The first consideration with the ball above our feet is where to align ourselves. Anytime we alter the lie angle of the club, we change the clubface aim. To illustrate this I attach a magnetic pointer onto the clubface. If the club is soled flush to a flat surface, the clubface can align itself to the target. But, once you bring the toe of the club up, the aim of the clubface goes to the left. This is more true with lofted clubs like wedges versus less lofted clubs like fairway woods. So our first adjustment is to align ourselves to the right of the target. The second adjustment is to figure out how to avoid crashing our club into the slope. To do this we must stand slightly taller at address and then swing the club on a flatter plane. The lie angle of the club will dictate our swing plane. In this case the lie angle of the club is on a flatter plane and we need to match that up in the backswing and downswing. If we swing the club too upright we will either hit a shot off the toe of the club or crash the club into the slope. To swing on a flatter plane, you simply need to allow your upper body (shoulders) to turn freely back and through on a level plane. Picking the club up with the arms ...

Callaway Diablo Edge Men's Golf Driver
Taking top honors in Golf Digest's 2010 Hot List, this standard version of the Callaway Diablo Edge Driver offers superior face technology, a higher MOI, a deeper CG, and better aerodynamics--all adding up to the longest, most accurate all-titanium driver Callaway has made yet. It features a unique construction that fuses four titanium elements together for optimal weight efficiency and longer ball flight, and improved aerodynamics for reduced drag in the down swing. It's complemented by an Adela Habanero high-performance graphite shaft, which provides incredible feel and performance.

Callaway's standard version of the Diablo Edge Driver.
Standard vs. Tour Models
Diablo Edge Drivers feature two unique shapes, but all the same technology. Both drivers offer a 4-piece fused titanium design, a chemically milled hyperbolic face cup, and an aerodynamic body shape.
  • The standard model features a core Callaway technology (S2H2), which removes weight from the hosel and repositions it in the perimeter of the golf club for more stability.
  • The Tour model has a full-length hosel, less face progression and an optimized center of gravity that provides the look, feel and performance highly skilled golfers demand.

Callaway Core Technology: S2H2
Callaway's patented Short, Straight, Hollow, Hosel (S2H2) shortened the length of the hosel, allowing weight to be moved lower and to the more useful perimeter area of the clubhead. This bore-through design (Modified Tru-Bore Technology) allows the shaft tip to extend through the hosel and clubhead to the sole, improving feel and control by moving the tip of the shaft closer to the center of the clubface.

4-piece Fused Titanium Design
The use of Fused Titanium in a 4-piece modular design produces the most weight efficient all titanium driver Callaway's ever created. Each part is precision-formed and accurately fused together, allowing weight to be positioned optimally, delivering distance-enhancing, penetrating ball flight.

Chemically Milled Hyperbolic Face Cup
An acid chemical reduction process selectively removes unwanted material from the face cup for precision thickness control, resulting in our most consistently high ball speeds ever. And the strategic hyperbolic shaping of the face thickness dramatically improves impact efficiency and produces a larger effective hitting area--resulting in less disparity between the balls you hit in the center of the clubface and the balls you don't.

The sweet spot on a Callaway club with Hyperbolic Face Technology on the left, and a traditionally faced club on the right.

Compared to standard clubs, ball speed on off-center impacts from this club with Hyperbolic Face Technology will be noticeably greater. This contributes significantly to total distance on off-center hits.

Aerodynamic Body Design
Callaway reduced drag in the downswing for higher impact speeds by using an aerodynamic body design that refines and optimizes all edge transitions. This reduces drag up to 8 percent versus other 460cc driver heads.

Antique Irons - The Forgotten Clubs in the World of Antique Golf Clubs

Antique Irons - The Forgotten Clubs in the World of Antique Golf Clubs

Golf Clubs

If you listen in to any conversation involving antique golf club collectors, there are a few things that you are almost certain to hear being discussed.  Unfortunately, antique irons are not likely to be one of those things.  Undoubtedly, you will hear about the hickory golf club fascination and how everyone involved in the conversation has a collection of golf memorabilia which is just a little bit better than everyone else's.

However, antique irons seem to garner very little attention even though they hold a much esteemed role in the history of golf.

Perhaps one explanation is that although the history of golf itself can be traced back as far as the mid 15th century, it is widely accepted that irons were not introduced on a large scale until the later part of the 18th century, in Scotland, the birthplace of golf as we know it.

Another possible explanation is the annoyance of many early on that these additional irons created too many club choices, and markedly slowed down the pace of play.

Initially, irons were introduced as, and used for, hitting from rough or otherwise unplayable lies.  Nearly 100 years later, in the late 1870's, antique irons expanded their reach within a player's arsenal with the introduction of driving irons and mid-range irons.  Until they started to really increase in popularity during this time, most were produced by blacksmiths.

The other interesting fact about antique irons which is common knowledge to the avid collector, but perhaps not by all was the naming conventions associated with these clubs.  Unlike today's names for irons such as 2 iron, 3 iron, 7 iron etc., one would instead today find antique irons called Cleeks(equivalent of a 2 iron), Jiggers(Today's Wedge), Mashies(5 iron), and Niblicks(9 irons). They also lacked then, and do now, a common appearance, as they were not mass produced, but forged by individual blacksmiths.

When you look back at the history of golf, it is clear that antique irons have had a significant role to play in the evolution of the game.  There are some many intriguing aspects to collecting antique golf clubs, and that might be the reason that they are sometimes over shadowed.  I hope your appreciation of them grows just a bit with your newfound knowledge of their role in golf history.

Custom Made Golf Clubs

Custom Made Golf Clubs

Golf Clubs

In this article, I will try to give you a foundation for the importance and variables that go into building a set of custom made golf clubs. For the purpose of this article, we will deal with building your iron set and look at custom fitting your woods in a future article.

I`m sure that you agree that consistently hitting a golf shot, both solid and at your target, is a very difficult thing to do. Careers and businesses have been built just concentrating on helping golfers hit good golf shots. Well, here`s the problem, you have a great, repeating golf swing but you are still not getting the results you want. The problem exists with your clubs. If your clubs don`t fit you and your swing, you are going to hit shots that are pushed, pulled, fat and who know what else you might be doing.

That`s where custom made golf clubs come in. It is very important that you are playing with golf clubs that suit you! I am going to review the different variables that come into play when building a custom golf club set.

Here are the components that make up the custom made golf club.

1. GRIP SIZE

2. SHAFT FLEX

3. SHAFT TYPE

4. LENGTH

5. LIE

1. GRIP SIZE:

Here, we are going to measure from your wrist to top of your middle finger and from the top of your thumb to the top of your middle finger. As a general rule, let`s say that if your first measurement, wrist to top of middle finger, is 6 inches or less you need a small grip, 6 to 8 inches a standard grip and 8 inches plus a midsize grip.

The grip is important because the right grip allows you to swing the golf club freely. A grip that is too small won`t allow you to grip the club securely and a grip that is too large won`t allow you to release the golf club through the hitting area. Also, it is recommended that you use the same grip type through your whole set.

2. SHAFT FLEX:

There are two different measurements that are used, one for your irons and, secondly, for your woods. We will address the irons.

Here`s the iron range (how far you carry your 5 iron):

180 yards plus = S Flex

170 to 179 yards = Firm Flex

160 to 169 yards = R Flex

130 to 159 yards = A Flex

129 and under = L Flex

The benefits of swing the correct flex are obvious. If you are swinging the correct flex you are going to max out your distance/accuracy quotient and as can imagine the wrong shaft flex can lead to all kinds of problems.

3. SHAFT TYPE:

Here we are talking about steel or graphite. I would say this mostly personal preference. The graphite shaft may give you a little more distance with less vibration back into your hands but less accuracy. The steel shaft will be more consistent and, also, there are steel shafts specifically made to lessen the vibration. So, I guess the choice here is all about personal preference. For what it`s worth, you see very few graphite shafted iron sets on the professional tours.

4. LENGTH:

This mainly deals with how tall or short you are. Without getting into the specifics, let`s just say that if you under 5 feet 7 inches you should be looking at shorter clubs and if you are 6 feet 1 inch and over, longer clubs. These adjustments are made in small increments, starting at quarter inches.

5. LIE:

This is the angle that the clubs lays at address. Again, depending on your height your lie angle may need to be adjusted, plus or minus. This adjustment is very important because this lie angle may be what is causing you to push or pull your shots. The lie angle needs to be adjusted depending upon a combination of your height and a measurement of your wrist to the floor.

Those are the components that go into a custom golf club set. As you can see, there are many ways that your clubs can throw your game off and with a few adjustments you can turn those negatives into positives.

The best and easiest fitting system that I have seen is GigaGolf`s eFit System. The system is super easy to use and, as a bonus, GigaGolf has extremely high quality golf clubs at manufacturer direct ( that`s a good thing ) prices. Take a look, I think you will like it.
